Merseta is only one of the known 21 sectors, of training and education departments, which was established to develop, and promote talented candidate in skills training for scarce skills through Merseta Learnerships. They operate under the ‘Skills Development Act of 1998’. Each sector reflects a different area of South Africa’s economy. Merseta was established to aid and develop within the Engineering, Manufacturing and all associated service areas.  Industries that are included in this sector are Auto Manufacturing, Metal, and Engineering, Plastic Industries, Tyre Manufacturing, as well as Motor Retail and Component Manufacturing.

There are approximately 44 000 companies within this sector, with more than 600 000 skilled workers. The skilled workforce in South Africa has a big gap, Merseta aims to aid in filling this gap, by providing talented individuals, the opportunity to become vital parts in the workforce. Scarce skills are being identified, assessed and candidates are given opportunities to fill these gaps. With their aid there is a reduction in inequality and unemployment, stabilizing the economy.

Candidates are asked to register with the Department of Labour, as an unemployed individual, seeking a learnership. Candidates can do this via the link provided under the application process. Candidates must ensure their contact details are kept up to date and that they are always accessible via these methods of contact. Candidates whom have registered may be contacted when an appropriate learnership becomes available if candidates adhere to all requirements.

Most of these learnerships will be for a duration of 12 to 24 months. Learners will also receive a monthly stipend, however these do not usually include transport, meals, and accommodation.
